Waste separation is standard practice these days, but let's take a moment to reconsider why we separate our waste.
To reuse as resources
Some waste can be recycled as resources. However, once reusable resources are incinerated, they cannot be returned to their original resource state.
According to Tokyo Gas, the petroleum used to make plastic is expected to run out in about 50 years if current consumption continues. To avoid wasting finite resources, let's properly separate our waste and reuse resources.
Reusable waste
- Used paper → Cardboard, picture books, printing paper, etc.
- Paper cartons → Toilet paper, kitchen paper, etc.
- PET bottles → Uniforms, egg cartons, etc.
- Glass bottles → Bottles, asphalt paving, etc.
- Cans → Cars, home appliances, building materials, rails, etc.
For efficient incineration
If waste is not separated, incineration efficiency decreases, and more landfill space is required. This leads to using excessive energy for waste incineration, which negatively impacts the environment.
Furthermore, incinerating non-combustible materials not intended for incineration can cause damage to the incinerator.
