The global waste problem is in a serious state.
It is recognized as a global social issue, and the "SDGs" adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015 include 17 goals and 169 targets as international goals from 2016 to 2030.
Why is waste reduction necessary?
Do you even know why waste reduction is necessary in the first place?
According to the Ministry of the Environment, the total amount of waste (general waste) discharged in Japan in Reiwa 1 (2019) was 42.74 million tons, an enormous amount equivalent to approximately 115 Tokyo Domes. The amount of waste discharged per person per day is 918 grams, and both the total amount of waste discharged and the amount of waste discharged per person per day have remained flat.
Furthermore, final disposal sites have decreased by 1.1 percent compared to the previous year, and the recycling rate is also on a downward trend.
If industrial waste is added to the calculation, the amount of waste discharged becomes even more enormous.
Although the total amount of waste discharged and the amount of waste discharged per person have remained flat, the capacity and number of final disposal sites are on a downward trend, raising concerns about the possibility that waste may not be able to be processed in the future.

Waste creates various problems.
High processing costs
Various costs are incurred to process waste. These costs increase as waste increases.
Lack of landfills
Waste is processed by being buried in final disposal sites. If there are not enough disposal sites, it will be necessary to clear new forest land to build disposal sites, leading to environmental destruction.
Environmental burden
The transportation and incineration of waste generate carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. The generation of carbon dioxide leads to global warming, and as global warming progresses, it will have a significant impact on the ecosystems of animals and plants on Earth.
To reduce waste
To reduce waste, sorting and being mindful of the 5 Rs are important. Let's start with what we can implement today.
Examples of recycling
- Milk cartons become toilet paper when recycled
Milk cartons become toilet paper when recycled. Milk cartons are made of high-quality paper, so just 6 cartons can make one roll of toilet paper.
- Aluminum can recycling
Recycling aluminum cans allows new aluminum cans to be made with less energy. Aluminum is made from an ore called bauxite, which requires a lot of energy. However, by recycling collected aluminum cans, 33 recycled cans can be made with the same amount of energy used to make one new aluminum can.
